Workshop description

The 18th conference of the International Study Group for Systems Biology (ISGSB) will be held in Sommarøya near Tromsø in September 2018. The day preceding the ISGSB conference will be designated for Master students, PhD students and PostDocs – The Young Study Group for Systems Biology (YSGSB). This workshop shall help young researchers to get an introduction into some of the research fields covered at the main conference. Conferences like the ISGSB can be exciting but intimidating places for young researchers. Many of the talks will be in fields you don’t have a firm grasp on and presenting your own findings in front of famous scientists can be a terrifying experience.

The YSGSB workshop wants to provide a relaxed atmosphere for learning, support, and exchange. Alongside the scientific lectures and discussions, it tries to address issues relevant to young researchers, such as job market entry and necessary skills. We will organize talks tailored to the session of the main conference, create a laid-back and collaborative atmosphere, and prepare everyone for the conference. The day will feature a series of introductory talks on the session topics of the ISGSB conference that will be given by some of the invited speakers of the main conference, (Jannie Hofmeyr (Stellenbosch, South Africa), Costas Maranas (Pennsylvania, USA)) as well as some attendees of the conference (Kathrin Thedieck (Groningen, Netherlands), Daryl Shanley (Newcastle, UK) and Jürgen Pahle (Heidelberg, Germany)). These talks provide background and context for the talks later in the week. Interaction with the speakers and networking amongst the students shall help the participants to build scientific network.

Wednesday evening, a career evening will be held with representatives from industry and academia. They will present their CV and work place, including challenges and opportunities. The participants will gain insight into opportunities after their PhD and can further quiz the speakers over a social program that rounds off the evening.
