NORBIS is very excited to present a mini seminar on multiple sequence alignment here in Bergen on Friday November 20th. The lectures will be given by Professors Des Higgins and Cedric Notredame, two of the most prominent scientists in this field. Both Cedric Notredame and Des Higgins are teaching at the NORBIS course ‘An introduction to sequence comparison and database search’, which takes place November 16th-20th, and will end off the course by giving two public seminars Friday afternoon.
Time and place: Friday 20th November 2015, 13:15 – 15:00, Auditorium TM51, VilVite
Agenda:
13:15 – 14:00: “Grabbing High Hanging Fruits From the Tree Of Life” by Cedric Notredame
14:15 – 15:00: “How to make and test really really big multiple protein sequence alignments” by Des Higgins
Professor Cedric Notredame is a group leader at the Center for Genomic Regulation in Barcelona in Spain. The Notredame group focuses on the development of novel algorithms for the comparison of multiple biological sequences, and has produced a number of methods and tools within this area, including the programs T-Coffee and SAGA. Cedric Notredame has also co-authored the book Bioinformatics for Dummies.
Professor Des (Desmond) Higgins has a full professorship at the Conway Institute at the University College Dublin in Ireland. Des Higgins is probably most well known for the Clustal series of programs for multiple sequence alignment. One of the Clustal papers is on the top-10 list the most highly cited papers of all times. His research also includes multivariate analysis of omics data. Des Higgins was selected a fellow of the International Society for Computational Biology in 2015.
All are welcome! We will serve coffee and a snack during the break.

The first NORBIS course, An introduction to sequence comparison and database search, is soon about to take place, from 16th – 20th November, in Bergen. We still have some seats free, please sign up here by Monday 9th November:

Why should you follow this course? First of all, sequence comparison is a fundamental aspect in bioinformatics, and forms the basis for a wide range of bioinformatics applications – from evolutionary analysis of protein domains to short read alignment in next–generation sequencing.
Secondly, the course is taught by two of the most prominent scientists in this field, Professor Cedric Notredame and Professor Desmond Higgins. Notredame is a group leader at the Center for Genomic Regulation in Barcelona in Spain, and his group focuses on the development of novel algorithms for the comparison of multiple biological sequences. He has further produced a number of methods and tools within this area, including the programs T-Coffee and SAGA.
Both lecturers will give a seminar at the end of the course.

Do you have a great idea and wonder how to commercialise it? Bergen Technology Transfer Office (http://bergento.no) has the competence, experience and network necessary to bring your idea to the next level. NORBIS is pleased to announce that BTO will pay us a visit at CBU in Bergen, to give a lunch seminar about commercialisation.
First, Dag Finne will provide first-hand experience from commercialisation of software, before Malgorzata Barczyk will present the company in more general, including its role at UiB and services offered towards researchers. After the presentation, Margorzata will join us for late lunch and a short get-toghether, where you can ask her specific questions on how to follow up your own bright idea.
Time and date: Wednesday 4th November 2015 at 12.15-13.30 (sorry for the short notice!)
Place: Computational Biology Unit (CBU), Høyteknologisenteret, 5th floor, Computer building, in the CBU seminar room (Out the elevator and left).
Please sign up for the seminar AND lunch by 3rd November!
