NORBIS encourages you as a member to spend part of your PhD period (at least 3-6 months) at an institution abroad to benefit from international expertise and to expand your international network. We now also encourage our PhD members to spend time with your national colleagues and partners in national institutions. For international exchange, we can support each successful application with up to 50.000 NOK. For national exchange, we support the successful applicants with up to 20.000 NOK. Please note that the end of the exchange can not be any later than November 2024.
If you would like to apply for funding, download the application form and send the application and a letter of recommendation from your supervisor to: contact-norbis@uib.no. Do not hesitate to contact us at the same address for further questions.
Following the exchange, we expect you to send us a short (one page) report from your stay, describing what you have achieved, suitable for publishing on our webpages. We further encourage all students who receive funding to take an active part in our school, and attend our annual conference.

NORBIS international and national travel grant guidelines
By accepting a NORBIS international travel grant you must comply with the underlying guidelines, which are as follows:
- Maximum amount that you can apply for: 50.000 NOK for international stay and 20.000 for national stay.
- NORBIS will cover travel expenses for one outbound and return trip for the exchange. The student is expected to book economy tickets and otherwise use public transportation. Travel expenses will be reimbursed by NORBIS after the exchange, upon the display of all receipts from the journey. Travel reimbursement form and further instructions may be found here.
- NORBIS will support monthly living costs during the exchange up to 10.000 NOK, to cover rent, insurances and other extra expenses related to the stay. This grant will be paid by invoice to the home department of the student prior to the exchange, after which further reimbursement of living expenses will be administered locally. The student must document all expenses to be reimbursed, and after the exchange, the home department will refund everything that is not accounted for to NORBIS. - NORBIS will NOT cover compulsory school fees related to the exchange.
- The student will submit a brief report on the exchange to be published on the NORBIS web site. The report should be submitted no later than one month after the stay has ended.

International collaboration
NORBIS is active on the international scene, and collaborates and coordinates with related initiatives, such as the Swedish National Graduate School in Medical Bioinformatics (MedBioInfo), the National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden (NBIS) and the Helsinki Doctoral Education in Information and Communication Technology (HICT) to promote student exchange.
NORBIS further encourages its members to participate to events like BREW (Bioinformatics Research and Education Workshop) where the following partners institutions are also present: University of Helsinki, University of Bielefeld, Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin, and the European Bioinformatics Institute in the UK.
